Mr. Pivot, a former journalist, found a formula to draw Friday night audiences away from
American soap operas and French variety shows for a brush with high culture.

Swivelling on his chair and nudging his half-moon spectacles back into place, he moderated
elevated debates with no intellectual snobbery.

He introduced John Irving, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Vladimir Nabokov to the French and
popularized the French school of anti-Marxist New Philosophers.
